This article examines the professional careers of Braz José de Oliveira (1859-1935) and his son Braz José de Oliveira Júnior (1897-1974) as employees of the Brazilian State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs between 1885 and 1962. The study aims to analyze the professional careers of two generations of black people at the Itamaraty between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, exploring the paths these individuals took in the functional structure of the agency. In addition, it situates this analysis in a broader context of the evolution of Brazilian foreign policy towards Africa, highlighting the different ways in which racial issues influenced their functional position and professional advancement.
