In this article, we present the appropriations of Sparta by the Brazilian alt-right. We include in this radical political spectrum fascists and neo-Nazis, who carry demands such as authoritarian, anti-liberal, anti-democratic and anti-communist discourse, based on a nationalist structure and radical and Christian conservative conceptions. We start with the following problem: why did Brazilian appropriate the Spartan past? Our hypothesis is that this Sparta consists of using the past to promote hatred and violence against minorities and democracy itself. We set three objectives: i. to ask why historians should care about uses of the past?; ii. to identify how this political use of Sparta arrived in Brazil; and iii. to classify references to Sparta into “frames”.
Keywords: Neofascism; Sparta; Uses of the Past.
