Abstract:
An unanswered question still hovers over brazilian historiography: why, throughout the colonial period, were there so few attempts to found typography workshops, that is, a press in Portuguese America? This article focuses on the attempt to assess the influence of Portuguese censorship on this phenomenon, indicating the need for a historiographical review to advance investigations on the subject. It preaches, above all, the distancing of contemporary conceptions that are linked to notions of freedom of the press and censorship that would be exotic to the Portuguese-American society of the Ancien Régime. The objective is to demonstrate that the historiographical renewal can reveal new perspectives and broaden the understanding of the conditions of existence of the literate culture of the modern era in Portuguese America.
Keywords: typography, censorship, freedom, Portuguese America, Old Regime.
