Abstract

This article analyzes aspects and the dialogue between tradition and modernity in the novel Amar, verbo intransitivo by Mário de Andrade. These aspects are seen more closely through the appreciation of the narrator, the characters, and the emulation technique. The novel presents continuities with romanticism and the idyll and formation of novel genres but renews them. Mário de Andrade presents social aspects of the São Paulo bourgeoisie and compares German and Brazilian culture. In this sense, it does not present itself as a futuristic novel, which establishes substantial ruptures, but as a work that reconfigures tradition and criticizes it. Whether in formal aspects or social aspects.

Keywords: Tradition; Modernity; Mário de Andrade; Emulation.
