Abstract

This study addresses, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the legendary construction of the gaucho artist Vitor Mateus Teixeira (Teixeirinha). Teixeirinha's artistic production on the cinema screen is a fertile key to the study of Brazilian popular culture and collective memory. Retracing the hero's journey, we seek to analyze the contribution of the work "Coração de Luto" in the socio-historical and legendary construction of the artist. Methodologically, the study pursues an interdisciplinary perspective on the topic at hand. As research sources we used cinema, music, periodicals and images, triangulated with the concepts of History, Memory and Collective Imaginary. At the end of the work, we can see that the artist constitutes himself as a legendary hero, for the audience that identified with orphanhood, poverty, rural exodus and the challenges of a country at the beginning of its modernization process.
